[edit] Notes
[edit] Reasons for change
- The term "chicks" has negative connotations, especially in India, and is usually used in a derogatory, non-equal way.
- Having a name that is viewed in a non-serious manner could cause the wrong image to be projected, and result in the group not being taken seriously.
- Several group members have expressed discomfort with the "chix" part of the name.
Concern has been expressed about the name change, but the impact should really be minimal. For example, several regional chapters of LinuxChix do not use the exact name (e.g. AussieChix, ChicasLinux), yet consider themselves (and are accepted as) affiliates of LinuxChix. The concern about domain names and list hosting, etc, is really unnecessary, as it is very easy to address all of them. Concern about an implied "loss of branding" is equally unfounded, as has been demonstrated by chapters who do not use the LinuxChix name.
In the end, it is the activities of the group that are important. The name change is simply aimed at facilitating these activities. While affiliation with LinuxChix is desirable, it is not a core requirement that the name be adopted, nor is it demanded by LinuxChix international for the purpose of affiliation. More information available here.

[edit] Things/Points to be considered before the change
This was asked on the mailing list earlier so it will be nicer to hear how people wishing a name change plan to handle the following ::
1] Why/what/where/how we are trying to change things in India ? :- - Is it people's mindsets in general, casual attendee's offering comments in a conference a woman speaks at or people actually involved in a group with (dis)similar thoughts and attempts to help women in FLoss ? - Are we more interested in just the name or the *work* that LCIN can do? If the latter (work) is important we should find ways to collaborate with the local city-based LUG's, join their local work/meets and if none exist find ways to revive that work instead of trying to bring about a cosmetic name change.
[Aneesha]The name should be one that does not act as an impediment to what we are trying to do. That is why it needs to be "localized".
2] Our mailing list and our IRC channel still have 'Chix' appended. Currently LC hosts mailman and IRC for us but they will still have a '-Chix' appended to their name. [@linuxchix.org]. How do you see that changing ? Do you plan to continue using the linuxchix.org servers for hosting the list and irc channels or setup one with the new name?
[Aneesha] The mailing list and IRC channel should be migrated to the new name.
3] Website : linuxchix.org.in, mirror's our affiliation to parent org. - How do you plan to address the confusion resulting from all this change?
[Aneesha] I don't think there would be too much confusion. An announcement, a wiki page explaining the change should suffice. A simple thing like changing a phone number. - Is there a plan to register a new-Indian-name domain instead? If yes, there needs to be clarity and discussion on who will own/register the domain. IMHO, to avoid individual control, it should preferably not be held by a single woman but a group of women. - Do you plan to move the website ?
[Aneesha] Yes, a domain name for the new chapter name should be register and the website should be migrated to it.
4] When any woman talks about LCIN (with any person or at any local event) she will be introducing it as a local chapter of Linuxchix (or is that going to change too?). How does one wish away the "Chix" fron the main Linuxchix.org because that word and hence questions on the word 'chix' will still crop up, despite us having an Indian name. So how is she supposed to explain the different confusing names? How does one deal with the negative reactions of being a part of the main LinuxChix org?
[Aneesha] Only the introduction needs to bear the Linuxchix word. For all other purposes, the changed name should be used after introduction.
5] If we are voting for an organizational name-change, who gets to vote? Anyone with a mail ID or only women or only people we have met/known (how do we decide that person X really knows/met Y/Z) ?
[Aneesha] Anyone who has ever participated in the group, posted, edited a wiki page, etc.
6] What about 2 years down the line when more people join us and dislike whatever/something about this group and by sheer strength of numbers start asking for 'foo-change' on account of 'foo-reason'. Do we have plans to address their concerns because they are valid too?
[Aneesha] After 2 years, the group would be/should be more stable. It is really evolving right now and people are participating and therefore, it is agile. I don't see this happening again after 2 years.
Right now there is no clarity on what changes we will be voting for because a name change involves all of the points raised above. It is important to understand and clarify the very basics before voting can even begin.
